Award Information
The ACM SIGHPC Emerging Woman Leader in Technical Computing (EWL/TC) is an annual award open to any woman who has engaged in technical computing research, education, and/or practiced for 5-15 years since receiving her highest degree. This international award creates a new career milestone achievement, and consists of a $2,000 honorarium, travel support to the SC conference, and a recognition plaque. For the purposes of this award, "technical computing" includes all of the various fields that are part of what we think of as HPC – areas such as visualization, analytics, operations, scientific application software (creation and porting/tuning), libraries, and so on – as well as professionals working with everything from small, workgroup-sized systems, to leading systems on the TOP500 list.
Eligibility
To be considered for the SIGHPC Emerging Woman Leader in Technical Computing Award, the candidate must be a woman engaged in technical computing research, education, and/or practice for between 5 and 15 years (no fewer than five years and no more than fifteen years) after receiving her highest degree.
Candidates who have taken time out of the workforce and who, as a result, are professionally "mid-career" but are beyond 15 years since achieving their highest degree may still be nominated. The nominee's CV must establish that there was a gap in workforce participation in which the candidate was not in the workforce in any capacity. In this case the time since receiving the highest degree is calculated by subtracting time out of the workforce from the difference between the year the degree was awarded and the nomination year. For example:
Eligibility example:
PhD awarded: 2000
Nomination year: 2021
Time out of workforce: 7 years
Time since highest degree: 2021 - 2000 - 7 years = 14 years
Candidate is eligible for this award.
Note that if the candidate spent time out of HPC working in another field this exception does not apply.
Selection Criteria
Nominations will be reviewed for the quality and impact of the candidate's achievements. Successful nominations will demonstrate significant contributions to the computing community, including both technical/research/education and service/mentoring components.
Submissions
Nominations for the SIGHPC Emerging Woman Leader in Technical Computing Award need to be be submitted using the online nomination form. A sample of the form can be found here.
The form requests this information:
Name, address, phone number, and email address of nominator (person making the nomination). The most appropriate person to submit a nomination would be a recognized member of the community who is not from the same organization as the candidate and who can address the candidate’s qualifications.
Name, address, and email address of the candidate (person being nominated). It is ACM’s policy not to tell candidates who has nominated or endorsed them.
Suggested citation if the candidate is selected. This should be a concise statement (maximum of 25 words) describing the key technical or professional accomplishment for which the candidate merits this award. Note that the final wording for awardees will be at the discretion of the Award Committee.
Nomination statement (200-500 words in length) addressing why the candidate should receive this award. This may describe the candidate’s work in general, but should draw particular attention to the contributions that merit the award.
Copy of the candidate’s resume or curriculum vitae, listing publications, patents, honors, service contributions, etc.
At least 1, but no more than 2, supporting letters from endorsers, one page maximum length (each). Endorsers should be chosen to complement the perspective on the candidate’s suitability provided by the nominator. Each letter must include the name, address, and telephone number of the endorser, and should focus on the accomplishments which that endorser can attest to and place in context.
